Council honors passing of community trailblazer Dolores Sibonga 

Today Council President Joy Hollingsworth (District 3) released the following statement honoring the loss of former City Councilmember, community advocate, and barrier-breaking pioneer for women and people of color, Dolores Sibonga. Sibonga, who was also the first Filipino American admitted to the Washington State Bar Association, died Wednesday morning at the age of 95. She was appointed to the Council in 1978 and served until 1992.   

“Dolores Sibonga broke barriers throughout her life, serving as a trailblazing member of the Seattle City Council and dedicating her life to advancing social justice, equity, and community representation. Her leadership and unwavering commitment to empowerment uplifted many voices across Seattle, King County, and the state.  

“Her remarkable career spanned public service, law, and grassroots activism, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural fabric of our city. But there was more. Beyond her legislative accomplishments, Dolores will be remembered for her fierce integrity, mentoring, and lifelong devotion to making Seattle a more inclusive community for all. 

“On behalf of the City Council, I want to express our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and the countless individuals whose lives were touched by her extraordinary service. Thank you, Dolores.”
