Philippines Quake Death Toll Climbs to 61
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said the figure rose as additional bodies were recovered from affected zones. A broadcaster reported 33 people are still unaccounted for, while 1,221 others have been treated for injuries.
According to the Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center (DROMIC), more than 553,000 people across the Mindanao region have been affected by the disaster. The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that around 9,393 survivors are sheltering in official evacuation centers, while a further 54,274 have sought refuge with relatives or friends.
Damage assessments indicate nearly 8,900 homes were destroyed outright, with a further 36,691 sustaining partial damage. Search and rescue operations have been complicated by aftershocks, unstable structures, and severed road links that are hampering access to some of the hardest-hit communities.
The magnitude 7.8 quake struck off Mindanao's coast, triggering mass panic and widespread destruction across homes, schools, hospitals, and public infrastructure. General Santos City and parts of Sarangani province bore the brunt of the destruction, prompting authorities to declare states of calamity to accelerate relief and rebuilding efforts.
