Philippines Earthquake Death Toll Rises as Rescue Efforts Continue
According to reports, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said 487 people have been injured, with figures published by local media outlet Philstar.
Of the confirmed fatalities, 33 were reported in Region 12 and 12 in Region 11, although officials noted that the numbers are still subject to verification.
The earthquake struck at 7:37 a.m. local time on Monday near the coast of Sarangani province, triggering widespread destruction across parts of Mindanao. Buildings collapsed, essential services such as electricity and water were disrupted, and landslides were reported in multiple locations.
Search, rescue, and recovery operations remain underway across affected areas, with authorities warning that the death toll could still rise.
According to reports, at least 10 landslides were triggered by the quake, including several in southern Mindanao. In Sarangani province, 13 residents in Barangay New Aklan were reportedly buried after a landslide hit the community.
Officials are also investigating claims that an entire village may have been buried, although these reports have not yet been confirmed.
The disaster caused extensive infrastructure damage, with authorities reporting impacts on 18 bridges, 41 roads, and 238 public facilities. Several transport routes remain blocked or impassable.
Widespread power outages have affected around 130,000 consumers, while hospitals are operating under strained conditions, with patients treated in temporary outdoor tents due to aftershocks and structural risks.
In total, more than 149,000 people have been affected, including over 41,000 displaced residents, and nearly 3,000 homes have been damaged.
