Philippines Lifts Tsunami Warning After 7.8 Quake Strikes Sarangani
Tsunami waves were detected by sea level monitoring stations across the affected coastline, with the highest recorded wave reaching 1.48 meters in Kiamba, Sarangani province. Additional stations logged wave heights ranging from 0.09 to 0.84 meters, according to PHIVOLCS.
The agency determined that the recorded wave heights fell well below the threshold capable of causing structural damage, prompting the decision to lift the warning.
Despite the cancellation, PHIVOLCS urged residents in coastal communities to remain vigilant, particularly in the event of strong aftershocks. The agency reminded the public to stay alert to natural warning signs of an impending local tsunami — including intense earthquake shaking, a sudden and dramatic rise or fall in seawater levels, and the roaring sound of approaching waves — and to evacuate immediately to higher ground should any of these indicators be observed.
